247. Calvary's Answer

Self-condemn'd and unforgiven, to the Lord I would draw near, Both for cleansing and for pardon: will he deign my pray'r to hear?  Will he scorn my soul's petition, which his grace may well bestow?  Will he in his wrath repel me? Blood-stain'd Calvary says 'No!'

2.

O'er my life-wrongs I am mourning, I would weep o'er ev'ry sin; Guilt becomes a ceaseless burden, and my grief it long has been; Will the Lord Jehovah spurn me if to him I tell my woe?  Can he mock me in my anguish? Blood-stain'd Calvary says 'No!'

3.

If, with all my heart's defilement, I shall fall at Jesus' feet, Will he frown and let me perish, while his mercy I entreat?  Can he fail to show me favor, if in penitence I go?  Can he drive me from his presence? Blood-stain'd Calvary says 'No!'

4.

For thy foes so strangely cruel thou didst pray with dying breath; Surely contrite souls who seek thee thou wilt save from sin and death?  Am I worse than those who mock'd thee, and who pierc'd thee long ago?  Am I lost to love and mercy? Blood-stain'd Calvary says 'No!'
