Justice

Psa. 89:14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

Definitions:

1.  the quality of being just; righteousness, equitableness, or moral rightness:

5.  the administering of deserved punishment or reward.

Compare to Fairness

Fairness is hardwired into the human brain like the desire for food

Fairness is relative, Justice is absolute/foundational.

Fairness is subjective, Justice is objective.

If you demand justice (and we all do), you demand it against yourself as well.

Our Sense of Justice is:

Universal - Consensus - Social Contract

Acts 28:3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

Karma (Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.): the spiritual principle of cause and effect where intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect), both in this life and the next. The error here is that there is no natural law that makes this happen. Only a God of Judgment makes it happen. And often he defers or delays judgment for his own reasons. The law of harvest is similar to Karma, but the law of harvest works only without interference - drought, war, thieves, enemies can all thwart the law of harvest.

Natural - Intuitional - a Rational Sense - among:

Aesthetics: the intuition of beauty (harmony, balance, absence of defects)

                                delight (joy, pleasure, sport, fulfillment)

Empathy: the intuition of identity (self, society, love, hate)

Ethics: the intuition of duty (virtue, morality, fairness, gratitude, shame)

Justice: the intuition of merit (rights, vengeance, debt, guilt)

Humor: the intuition of irony? (awareness, understanding, relief)

                Consider which is murder:

Animal kills animal

Animal kills man

Human kills animal

Man kills man

Only one is murder because both duty and merit must apply. Animals have neither duty nor merit, man has both, the duty to do right, and the merit to be done right.

1.  God is a God of Justice

His Nature

14          Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small.

Prov. 20:10        Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

23          Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

Isa. 9:7                to establish it with judgment and with justice for ever. The zeal of the LORD will perform this.

2.  God expects us to serve the interests of Justice

Justice System Instituted by God

Gen. 9:5              your blood of your lives will I require; at hand of beast will I require it, at the hand of man;

6             Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed:

Justice System Required by God

Job 29:12           Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help

13          blessing of him was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow to sing for joy.

14           I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

15           I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.

16          I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

17           And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

Psalms 82:3      Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

7             Then will I cause you to dwell in this place... for ever and ever

Amos 5:24         But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Justice is Tricky (be careful to not be too zealous, remember thyself)

H. L. Mencken: Injustice is relatively easy to bear; what stings is justice.

Mat. 7:1-2           Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

Rom. 2:1             Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

Proposed Purposes of the Justice System

Punitive - Retributive - Retaliatory - Vindictive

Protective - Incapacitating or Limiting power to re-offend

Deterrent - Diminishing willingness to offend

Rehabilative - Redemptive - Improving character - giving offenders opportunity to resolve guilt

Restitutive - Reparative - Compensative - Restorative

Denunciative - Public Interest - Instructive to others -

Abstract Justice worthy in itself (really just the Fear of God)

Modern Justice Theory (Legitimate, Procedural, Codified, Applied/Executed)

The Bible anticipated and presaged modern Justice, and perhaps was even instrumental in developing it. There is really nothing modern about it.

A. Legitimate

Authentic (many powers are illegitimate, tyranny, enslavement, etc.  It is not an easy thing to know.)

Exo. 18:25          And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads

26          And they judged the people at all seasons:

Deut. 1:15            the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads

Deut. 16:18         Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates

Judg. 2:16           Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges

2Chr. 19:5           And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah,

Acts 13:20           And after that he gave unto them judges

Pro. 21:1             The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

Isa. 45:1              Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, to subdue nations before him;

Ezek. 45:9          O princes of Israel: remove violence and spoil, and execute judgment and justice,

Ezra 1:2               Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms

Mat. 22:17          Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

Mat. 22:21         Render unto Caesar things which are Caesar's; unto God things that are God's.

John 19:11          Thou couldest have no power against me, except it were given thee from above

Rom. 13:1            the powers that be are ordained of God.

2            Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God:

Titus 3:1              to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates

1Pet. 2:13           Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake:

14          sent by him for the punishment of evildoers,

2Pet. 2:10           and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled,

Appropriate - Without Hypocrisy

1Sam. 8:1-3        when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2            they were judges in Beersheba.

3            And his sons walked not in his ways, ...and perverted judgment.

2Sam. 23:3        He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

1Ki. 10:9             therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice.

Psa. 50:16           But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes

17           Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.

18          When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him,

19          Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.

20          Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest

Mat. 7:3              why beholdest the mote in brother's eye, but considerest not the beam in thine eye?

                4            Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye;

                5             Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye;

John 8:7             He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

B.  Procedural

Logical - others should be able to follow the logic

4            I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

Job 31:35           Oh that one would hear me! that the Almighty answer me, that adversary had written a book.

36          Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

37          I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

Isa. 41:21            Produce your cause, saith the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons,

Reasonable - Rational - (Not Emotional, Rash)

Judgment has two phases, Discernment and Recompence, or Guilt/Innocence and Punishment, and as we will see, emotion does play a part in punishment, but not in discernment to arrive at truth and levels of responsibility.

1Sam 2:3            for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

Isa. 43:9             bring forth their witnesses, that they be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.

Rom. 3:19          every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Luke 19:22        Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant

Comprehensive - taking all into account

                17           Then both the men, shall stand before the priests and the judges, in those days;

18          And the judges shall make diligent inquisition:

19          Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother:

John 7:51            Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

C.  Codified

Based on Commonly Recognized Law - written and published beforehand

Exo. 31:18          And he gave unto Moses, two tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

D.  Applied

Equally to all - Reciprocal - Work both ways

Deut. 1:17           ye shall hear the small as well as the great

Deut. 25:1          then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.

Exo. 23:2           Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil;

3            Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause.

6             Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.

7             and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.

Proportionally

Deut. 19:6          while his heart is hot, and overtake himand slay him; he was not worthy of death

Deut. 22:26       unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death:

                6            And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone;

6            And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

3.  God allows Injustice - True Justice does not exist in this life

We must distinguish between injustice and unfairness.

Lord Bowen about an attempt at justice: I am reminded of a blind man in a dark room looking for a black hat which isn't there.

Finley Peter Dunn in "Mr. Dooley's Opinions": I tell ye Hogan's right when he says, "Justice is blind."  Blind she is, and deaf and dumb and has a wooden leg!

H.L.Mencken: Justice is not blind, nor is she evenhanded. The scales do not balance and they cannot be made to balance. Not, that is, until we are freed of our humanity and turned to demigods. And then justice will no longer be needed.

Justice is thwarted often. The wealthy often escape justice, the poor are often denied justice. Of course, the attempt at justice is noble, necessary and beneficial even when imperfect, and it is always imperfect. Standing against injustice must be by wisdom (pick your battles), but imperfect justice is all you can ever hope for anyway in this life. Still, you can see it afar off, and it gives you understanding about God's justice coming.

False assumptions (that circumstances indicate standing with God):

Job 4:7                [Eliphaz] who ever perished, being innocent? where were the righteous cut off?

8            Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

Job 11:6               [Zophar] And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

Job 15:20            [Eliphaz] The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days,

Job 18:17             [Bildad] His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

18           He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

19           He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

20           They that come after him shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted.

21           Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

Job 20:4             [Zophar] Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

5             That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

27          The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.

28          The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

29          This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

Job 22:5              [Eliphaz] Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

6             For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

7              Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

8             But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

9             Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

                10           Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

23           If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

24           Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

25           Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

Correct observations (that you can’t tell righteousness by circumstances):

Job 21:7              [Job] Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?

8            Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.

9            Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

10          Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

11           They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

12          They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.

13          They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

14          Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

15           What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

23           One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

24           His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

25           And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

26           They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

(Psalm 73:1-16)

Two Fulfilments of Justice

Temporal Collective Justice – The Millennial Reign

Most of the prophecies in the OT concern the promise of Justice on the earth in plain view of earth’s inhabitants. There is much to say about the Millennial Reign, the restoration of nature, the length of human life-span, the unimaginable prosperity and health, but one of the central themes is practical enforcement of justice:

Psa. 9:8               And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment in uprightness.

12          he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: forgetteth not cry of humble.

Psa. 67:4              for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.

Psa. 89:14          Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne:

Psa. 96:10           Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: he shall judge the people righteously.

13           he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, the people with his truth.

Psa. 98:9            for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge, and with equity.

Isaiah 9:7            upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.

Isa. 26:21           LORD cometh to punish iniquity: earth shall disclose her blood, no more cover her slain.

Jer. 23:5             a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

Jer. 31:23           The LORD bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness.

Zeph. 3:5            The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity:

Zech. 9:9            thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly,

1 Cor. 6:1             Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?

2             Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

Rev. 6:10            How long, O Lord, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on earth?

Rev. 19:11            And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Eternal Personal Justice – Hell (and Heaven)

The concept of no punishment after this life is antithetical to the concept of Justice. Death itself is not actually punishment. And there are different calibers of death. Death in youth is not the same as death in old age. Violent death is not the same as peaceful death. Great sins demand greater punishment. Simple generic death cannot satisfy justice, because justice is not stupid, it is precise and zealous. Notwithstanding Rom 6:7 (he that is dead is freed from sin – “freed” is also translated “justified” or “acquitted” elsewhere) death itself does not free men from the due reward of their sins, but just from the power of sin over their lives. Our committed sins make demands of us after death. Victims cry out for justice long after their entire generation passes away. While there is great joy in the temporal collective justice, the practical enforcement of justice in this life, there is no joy in eternal personal justice. God takes no pleasure in it, and neither should we.

Gen. 4:10            What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

1Sam. 24:12      the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

Micah 7:9            I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.

What Is Hell? Is It a Place of Eternal Torment?

The Bible’s answer

Some Bible translations use the word “hell” for the Hebrew word “Sheol” and the matching Greek word “Hades,” both of which refer to the common grave of mankind. (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:27) Many people believe in a fiery hell, as shown in the religious artwork accompanying this article. However, the Bible teaches otherwise.

Those in hell are unconscious and so cannot feel pain. “There is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol.”—Eccl. 9:10.

Good people go to hell. The faithful men Jacob and Job expected to go there.—Gen. 37:35; Job 14:13.

Death, not torment in a fiery hell, is the penalty for sin. “He who has died has been acquitted from his sin.”—Rom. 6:7.

Eternal torment would violate God’s justice. (Deut. 32:4) When the first man, Adam, sinned, God told him that his punishment would simply be to pass out of existence: “Dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Gen. 3:19) God would have been lying if he were actually sending Adam to a fiery hell.

God does not even contemplate eternal torment. The idea that he would punish people in hellfire is contrary to the Bible’s teaching that “God is love.”—1 John 4:8; Jer. 7:31.
